Oogity Boogity Boogity, Let’s Go Racin’, Boys!

Well, this weekend was race weekend. And Jimmie Johnson took the checkered! That’s my detailed report on the NASCAR side of things… I hope nobody takes offense, I’ve just never liked NASCAR. But, I love about every other form of motor sports, which is why I’m excited about this news..

Dario Franchitti, an Indy 500 winner, was at the race this weekend to announce that the New Hampshire Motor Speedway will be adding an Indy series race! So, now we’ve got more than NASCAR!

We’ve also got rally racing up near Berlin. Nobody ever seems to watch rally, though. That kind of sucks, because it’s one of the best. They race on dirt, tarmac, and snow. They race at high speeds through windy back roads that you’d never dream of speeding down. Although not head to head, it’s also very intense. Check it out.

Human Rights?

Beatrice Munyenyezi, a Manchester resident, has been charged with two counts of procuring citizenship unlawfully. If convicted, she could face 10 years in the big house and could have her citizenship stripped. And according to federal prosecutors, she directed kidnapping, rape, and murder during the Rwanda Genocide in 1994.

For those of you who do not know about it, The Rwanda Genocide took the lives of around 800,000 Tutsi and peaceful Hutu. The Rwanda Military and Hutu militia were the aggressors. They used propaganda to try and get all Hutu to kill their Tutsi neighbors, as well as mass killings of their own doing.

Well, the news report from the AP says that she directed some of the killings. There were no numbers or more specific information provided. If she was directly involved as is told by the feds… ten years seems pretty minimal, huh? I mean, we couldn’t send her for trial for the genocide, so ten years for lying on her application for US citizenship would be the next best thing.

While I’m on it, the neighboring country of Uganda has issues of its own that need attention. The Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA), lead by Joseph Kony, has abducted around  30,000 Ugandan children. The abducted face years of brutal abuse and are turned into child soldiers. All this took place during the twenty years of war in Northern Uganda, and since 2006, Kony and the LRA have more or less gone into hiding in the Congo. There are several groups that are dedicated to helping the child soldiers and bring justice to Kony, one of which is Invisible Children.

I realize I might have gone a little off track from the story.. But there are so many problems that need to be addressed. However, some of the most severe occur far away from our home and are not well knownr.

Stayed tuned for when I rip the Westboro Baptist Church a new one…

Car of the Week… #10

Posted by: Frank @ 10:00 AM
Category: Car Of The Week

Because I missed last week, I’m doubling up this week. And for the second car of the week, I give you the Subaru Outback!

It’s nothing special. But given our situation up here in New England, it makes for such an awesome car. In fact, all Subaru models make for awesome New England vehicles. The ever present all-wheel drive platform give them a tight, road hugging, handling ability on pavement. On those dirt back roads, they grab hold and are even forgiving if you swing the back end out (I might have done this a few times). But the winter is what makes these cars so desirable.

So, a foot of fresh powder fell and you want to get to your local ski area before the groomers pack it into corduroy, huh? No problem. Get in and go. There have been times where I’ve done just that- No need to plow, snowblow, or shovel. Bust your way out of the driveway and hit the slopes that much quicker.

They’re fun to drive in the snow, too. However, it’s not an Outback that I drive, but another model I’ll leave nameless. But when it snows, I like to take it out for sport. Sideways corners, tight donuts, and unplowed lot drifting. When the tach is high in second gear, and you’re sideways around a tight corner with fresh snow billowing over the hood, you can’t help but smile.

The Outback is my choice this time because of its unrivaled popularity. So many people around New Hampshire and New England love its practicality. The wagon has copious amounts of cargo room, while still being a manageable sized car. The price tag is also pretty affordable, which makes it an awesome choice for a daily commuter for the New Englander.

Off the Beaten Path

If you turn off route 13 somewhere around Mont Vernon, you can find Purgatory Falls. I’ve been there a few times, but I’ll tell you this: You can’t get there from here.

There’s some back roads that turn to dirt. The dirt road turns into a little bit of a walk. The walk turns into a little bit of a hike. But, if you can find it, it’s worth it. The falls aren’t exactly raging, but they’ve cut a deep trench in the rock cliff face they cascade over. From the top, you can see where the water used to flow. A shallow gully had been carved by the erosion, and an eight foot hole in the rock ledge below indicate where the falls had originally been.

I wouldn’t swim here. The water did look pretty stagnant, and the place is loaded with mosquitos..

The picture I took doesn’t show the entirety of the falls, just where the water finally opens up into the little pond. But from top to bottom, there’s probably a good forty foot cliff face. So, if you seek out the falls and find them, be careful. The rocks do get slippery. And it’s not an easy trip to the hospital, either.

Rochester Shoe Festival Sucks, People “Not Surprised”.

Posted by: Lulu @ 11:27 AM
Category: NH Entertainment

Rochester- On Saturday, Rochester officials foolishly decided to hold a “Shoe Festival” in downtown Rochester. This is the first year of the festival, and according to those who attended, it ” blew”. Other attendees were merely confused about the festival, asking “Why the fuck are we having a festival for shoes?”.  The answer to that eloquently put question is that Rochester used to be one giant shoe factory or some stupid shit like that. So why did the Rochester Shoe Festival fail so badly? Here are the top three possibilities-

1.) The Shoe Festival took place the same day and time as Portsmouth’s Market Square Day, an event that boasts a much higher rate of people who are bangable.

2.) Nobody wants to go to Rochester for a whole day. You go to downtown Rochester for 15 minutes to pawn a bracelet and buy a 12-pack.

3.) It’s a Shoe Festival. A stupid goddamn Shoe Festival.

Car of the Week… #9

Posted by: Frank @ 11:00 AM
Category: Car Of The Week

Oh, don’t hate me. This week’s car of the week is the Police Package Dodge Charger!

I don’t like the base version of the Charger, I’ll admit. If you go for a muscle car, you need the muscle. A V6 doesn’t quite cut it. You need the roar of a V8. You need the gas guzzling 5.7 liters of get up ‘n go. You need the ability to lay a strip of rubber all the way up main street if you so desire. But why use the Police spec version instead of the R/T or the Super Bee?

Because it’s the most intimidating looking cruiser that’s ever come up behind me, that’s why. Whether you’re headed up 93 to cruise the Kanc, or headed across 101 to go spend the day at Hampton, you will see one. It might be lying in wait, it might be sneaking up behind you, or it might just be headed somewhere more important than dealing with your law-breaking, speeding self. Wherever you see it, you think ‘Damn, that’s intimidating.’ The brush guard on the front just wants you to run, so it can ram your backside and send you spinning off into the median.

And that’s only the model with the good old green and brown paint scheme. I don’t know if you’ve seen the murdered out cruisers. Black paint, black window tint, black rims? Good God! It’s gorgeous, but I’d probably shit my pants if it came up behind me with the blues on.

The car itself uses a 5.7L V8, and puts out around 365 horsepower. The police package also has a beefed up brake system to outperform any of you riff-raff causing hooligans that might think about running. Other than that, this car doesn’t really have anything too special. Just a touch of badassery and an AR-15 riding shotgun.
