Crunchy Western Boys

The forefathers of “crunchy western” music Jim McHugh, Morris Manning, Steve McBrian, and Jacob Stern deliver a homegrown, crunchy cookin’ performance with mandolin, bass, fiddle, guitar, dobro, banjo, and vocals. Their unique, smooth sounds are sure to tame the wildest beast or maybe even awaken the spirit within! Performances include original, crunchy, bluegrass, folk, and americana tunes.

150 people were stung by a Jellyfish at Rye Beach on Wednesday. Doug Gorout, chief of fisheries for the state identified it as a Lion’s Mane Jellyfish. Apparantly that species rarely swims this far south.
This particular Jellyfish weighed 45-50 pounds and its longest tentacle was 13 feet. It caused a lot of itching, burning, and many people were treated with vinegar. Several others were transferred to the hospital.
The cool thing about this story is that a single lifeguard swam out on a board 100 yards off shore with a pitchfork and killed it. By the way… this picture is not of the actual Jellyfish. Check WMUR if you want that

This place is amazing.
If you don’t stop to witness the impressive displays that mother nature has to offer, then you miss out on far too much. Tonight I was in Portsmouth, sitting out on the docks of the river as an awesome thunderstorm rolled by. Before it actually rained, I watched lightning bolts that spread across the entirety of the sky, blanketing the darkened heavens in a spiderweb of natural electricity.
Then it poured.
I watched buckets upon buckets of water pelt the river from the cover of a nearby building. The rain made it difficult to see the Maine shoreline..

Then it stopped.
It even cleared up for a bit over Portsmouth. I could still hear thunder and see the lightning flash, but the sky was clear enough overhead to let the stars shine through.
This place is amazing.

Under new state law, teachers are able to once again beat unruly students. Under RSA 982:09, teachers may utilize their hands and body for disciplinary actions. The use of rulers, pointers, etc. is strictly prohibited, due to the excess damage that could be done.
Well, I made that up. But there are new laws about bullying.. Now, a single act can be defined as bullying. They also address cyber bullying and bullying outside of the school zone.
I have mixed feelings about this. While I feel terrible for everybody who gets bullied, it’s a part of growing up. I got bullied. A lot of my friends got bullied. In my opinion, it taught me how to deal with rude, obnoxious, and annoying people in the long run. That’s a good talent.
But then again, I do read the stories where bullying gets too extreme. Kids stay home from school, kids are emotionally and physically hurt, and some other, more extreme cases..
I just hope this doesn’t get out of hand. There needs to be a balance of discipline and freedom. Too much of either can make for a bad situation.

Kelley Morris knows exactly who she is as an artist and plans to be the next authentic female blues-belter of her generation. Recently, she’s seen a surge in popularity since opening for Sum 41 and The Offspring. Her band also played second-stage opening for Heart, Melissa Etheridge, Pat Benatar, Blondie and The Donnas. In 2007, she appeared on the TV show “Community Auditions”, winning two episodes and competing in the season finale. The Fallen Free features Jennifer Morris on vocals, Dave Coulter on upright and electric bass, Jonathan Macauley on drums and Phil Clayman on the harmonica.

So, I was on the South Shore down in Mass for the 4th, and the weather really wasn’t that bad. I drove back up the night of the 5th and got home about 10pm. It was much hotter and more humid when I left my air conditioned car when I got home… What the hell. Today at work, I just about died. I went loopy around the middle of the day until I jumped in the lake with all my clothes on. With WMUR predicting 95 tomorrow, my core temp might bubble up and break my sanity.
Enjoy the day!

So I just wanted to give everyone a quick little update on Whats Up with the site in the coming weeks…. first, WE ARE OFFICIALLY 1 MONTH AWAY from the WhatsUpInNH.com Summer Showcase. Headliner Roots of Creation played at the Nateva Music Festival this weekend and word on the street is that their set was amazing. You can check them and the other bands who will play at the showcase– The Ghost Dinner Band and Doctors Of Flight right here in our NH Music section.
Also, B-Dandy clothing out of Portsmouth is giving 2 t-shirts a month to our visitors. 2 will be in the door prizes at the Summer Showcase which include great businesses (complete list coming in a day or two) such as The Common Man, Boloco, Wildcat Mountain, The NH Fisher Cats, and many many more. That leaves 2 for July… so I will be coming up with a NH trivia contest in the next few days and we will draw winners out of those that enter correct answers. And ill throw in 2 tickets to the Summer Showcase as well to a 2nd winner.
Plus…. 3 new bands are getting added tonight. You have overwhelming spoken and the #1 thing people want from this site is NH music coverage. We got you. We are working with many NH bands to bring you new content… but we are alwaysss looking for ideas for how we can do better. Hit me up with any ideas, suggestions, fan or hate mail at derek@whatsupinnh.com

I really have been stepping back on the videos of the day thing in an effort to focus on NH news and NH music (and making sure I get everything in order to make sure our Summer Showcase is the hottest party in NH this summer). That aside, I can’t think of a better way to send the New Hampshire-ites of Red Sox Nation into the 4th of July weekend then watching a stupid Yankees fan get smacked in the grill with a baseball. Enjoy! (and check back Monday for new bands and some new contests w/ prizes)
